WHEN AND HOW TO RECEIVE THE BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

[Adapted from Finding The Rock 501 – To hear the complete teaching visit cotrquitman.com and click on the Finding The Rock Tab – study notes are available]

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be filled.”    Matthew 5:6

There Must Be A Sincere Hunger For More Of God In Our Lives.

This Is Usually Accompanied By A Realization That There Is Something Missing In Your Walk With God.

  • There Is A Sense Of Need For More Power/Ability To Walk Victoriously Through This Life.

“As the deer pants for the water, so pants my soul for you, O God.”  Psalm 42:1

Be Open To An Ability That Transcends Your Own Capabilities!

Steps Of Simple Obedience:

Remember as you are discovering fullness –

  1. You Are Seeking A Biblical Experience Which Jesus Promised.

Then Peter said to them, “Repent and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  39 “For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”                                   Acts 2:38-39

      2. You Are Coming To Jesus Himself – He Is “The Baptizer.”

… when God sent me to baptize with water, he told me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ John 1:33 NLT

     3. You Can Expect To Receive The Same Spirit And The Same Benefits Biblical Believers Received.

They worshipped in a supernatural dimension – they received the benefit of worship in other tongues. Expect to receive it; it is a privilege!

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.       Acts 2:4

As Peter was praying for the Gentiles, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard, and they began speaking with tongues and magnifying God.    Acts10:44-48

“The Holy Spirit fell upon them, as upon us”         Acts 11:15

Note: in Acts 19:6 Paul linked the baptism with the Spirit to the benefit of speaking in tongues.

And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.    Acts 19:6

Paul went on to say:  “I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all…”        I Corinthians 14:18

Why You May Expect To Receive The Beautiful, Enabling Grace Of  Speaking With Tongues/Spiritual Language.

  •  Because It’s Biblical
  • Because It’s Beneficial

But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,           Jude 20

He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.     I Corinthians 14:4

  •  Because It Assists You In Your Prayer Life

Likewise, the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.      Romans 8:26

  • Because It’s A Blessing

And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name, they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; Mark 16:17

As You Come To Jesus In Prayer…

Begin to praise the Lord openly in your own language. Remember when you seek Him and praise Him, you can’t do anything wrong! Come to Jesus like a little child, in trust and simple faith. Believe … and Receive!

  • No Need To Fear

“You fathers—if your children ask for a fish, do you give them a snake instead? 12 Or if they ask for an egg, do you give them a scorpion? Of course not! 13 So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.”               Luke 11:11-13

  • It is liberating to speak and sing audible praise to God. Be unafraid to allow the new language the Spirit gives you to flow freely.

Remember: that on the day the church was born, everyone received this resource for worship and prayer and at the same time they received the fullness of power for service and witness.

The spiritual language is clearly beneficial and to be desired, received, and exercised.

HOW TO RECEIVE THE FULLNESS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

  •  Ask To Receive

“If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”          Luke 11:13

If You Ask He Won’t Give You Something Else.

  •  Expect To Receive

If you then, evil as you are, know how to give good gifts [gifts that are to their advantage] to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask and continue to ask Him!      Luke 11:13 (Amp.)

  • Act In Faith

When an honest, hungry seeker asks for baptism with the Holy Spirit, he need not fear receiving less than God’s promise. He should relax in faith. It is not necessary to work up one’s emotions. A simple yielding to God and taking the time to vocalize the “wonderful works of God” will give the answer. The Holy Spirit is not received after many years of struggle trying to live for God. God wants people to receive the Holy Spirit at the beginning of their Christian experience.

Question: Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?

This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away all who have been called by the Lord our God.      Acts 2:39 NLT

If you would like to be baptized in the Holy Spirit and speak with a new tongue (see Acts 2:4), simply pray the following prayer and then act on it!

Prayer

Lord, You gave the Holy Spirit to Your Church to help us fulfill the Great Commission. I ask You in faith for this free gift, and I receive right now the baptism in the Holy Spirit. I believe that You hear me as I pray, and I thank You for baptizing me in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking with a new, supernatural prayer language. Amen

As a result of praying this prayer, your life will never be the same. You will grow in operating the gifts of the Holy Spirit. You will learn to experience Jesus’ victory as a living reality every day.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Basic Instructions For Releasing Your New Prayer Language

Remember, if you have repented of your sins, asked God to forgive you, and confessed with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, the Holy Spirit already lives in you. At that moment, the Holy Spirit came into your spirit to live. You were born again; therefore, Christ lives in your spirit.

From that moment, we must allow the Holy Spirit to flow out of us.

I Corinthians 14:15 NKJV

What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.”

This verse makes it clear that you must exercise your will!    In other words, it’s a choice! This requires faith – all prayer is faith! Often when we pray, we don’t feel a thing. In the same way, stepping out in your prayer language is a faith exercise. Sometimes it sounds like a few syllables to me. Parents, you recall the halting speech of a child or grandchild. My point is once you Pray To Receive The Baptism In The Holy Spirit, You May not have a fully formed vocabulary; you might, but it’s not the norm. However, you are going to have to open your mouth and start talking in a language you don’t know.

It will require faith and a conscious decision to cooperate with the Holy Spirit.

Dennis Bennett, in his book How To Pray For The Release Of The Holy Spirit, says, “Now, like a little child beginning to talk, just speak out the first sounds that come to your lips. Don’t even listen to yourself, just begin to make sounds. Keep your mind and heart on the Lord. Talk to him. Offer him the syllables that come, just like a child. And after you begin to make a sound, keep on going. Try not to talk in English or any other language you know. You can’t speak two languages at once. Pay no attention to any doubt, just keep on speaking. Don’t worry about how you feel or how you sound. Just keep talking to God in the new words he is giving you. You are speaking to your Father in heaven.”

For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit, he speaks mysteries.” (I Corinthians 14:2 NKJV)

It’s perfectly all right just saying if you want to. This is what the apostle Paul calls “singing in the spirit.” Some people at first find it easier to begin singing in the new language than to speak in it. You can sometimes get free and sing when you can’t seem to talk. Let the Holy Spirit guide your words, but also let him give you a tune. It may begin with a few simple notes, or perhaps it may be one note. After singing a while, try to speak in the spiritual language.
